KOGAS GSM-2101 is the Korea Gas Corporation's internal piping material specification governing all piping installed in its LNG import terminals and transmission pipelines. If you are an Indian manufacturer targeting South Korean LNG infrastructure projects, understanding GSM-2101 is the difference between winning and losing that enquiry.
Korea Gas Corporation (KOGAS) operates South Korea's national LNG import, storage, and distribution network. With four major LNG receiving terminals at Incheon, Pyeongtaek, Tongyeong, and Samcheok, KOGAS manages cryogenic piping at temperatures down to -162°C. GSM-2101 is the in-house standard that specifies exactly which materials, tests, and certifications are acceptable across these assets. Unlike a generic ASTM or ASME standard, GSM-2101 is project-specific to KOGAS infrastructure — compliance cannot be assumed; it must be documented.
GSM-2101 covers a defined list of piping materials for different service environments. Key approved materials and their ASTM equivalents are:
| Service Environment | GSM-2101 Approved Material | ASTM/ASME Equivalent |
|---|---|---|
| Cryogenic LNG piping (-162°C) | TP316L / TP304L stainless steel | ASTM A312 / ASME SA312 |
| LNG vaporizer headers | Austenitic SS ASME SA312 TP316L | ASME SA312 Grade TP316L |
| Seawater cooling systems | Duplex SS S31803/S32205 | ASTM A790 / A182 F51 |
| High-pressure gas headers | Alloy steel to ASME B31.3 | ASME SA335 P11/P22 |
| Utility steam piping | Carbon steel KS D 3562 | ASTM A106 Grade B equivalent |
| Send-out gas piping | Carbon steel API 5L Grade B | API 5L Grade B / ASME SA106 |
Many GSM-2101 submittals require KGS (Korean Gas Safety Corporation) approval — this is the regulatory body under South Korea's Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy that certifies materials used in high-pressure gas systems. For Indian exporters, this typically means:
| Property | TP304L | TP316L |
|---|---|---|
| UNS | S30403 | S31603 |
| Minimum service temperature | -196°C (cryogenic grade) | -196°C (cryogenic grade) |
| Mo content | None | 2.0-3.0% |
| Chloride resistance | Limited | Better (seawater-adjacent areas) |
| ASME standard for pipe | SA312 TP304L | SA312 TP316L |
| KOGAS preference | Send-out piping, utility | Cryogenic transfer, vaporizers |
For LNG in direct contact with piping metal, TP316L is the default GSM-2101 choice due to its higher molybdenum content providing additional protection against chloride-bearing condensation during re-gasification.
KOGAS terminals use large volumes of seawater for open-rack vaporizers (ORV) and forced-air vaporizers (FAV) cooling systems. These seawater circuits use duplex stainless steel S31803/S32205 (PREN > 34) to resist pitting corrosion from ambient seawater at the port locations. Ragnar Metals supplies ASTM A790 duplex pipe and A182 Grade F51 flanges that meet these requirements with full 3.1 MTC documentation.
We export ASTM A312 TP316L/TP304L pipe, A790 duplex pipe, and A182 F51 flanges to South Korean LNG projects with EN 10204 3.1 MTC, third-party PMI, and cryogenic impact test reports. Sea freight to Busan, Incheon, and Ulsan in 10-14 days.
