Super Duplex Pipe for Oil Wells: NORSOK M-630, NACE MR0175, and Grade Selection

By Ragnar Metals & Tubes Engineering Team • October 14, 2026 • 8 min read

Selecting the wrong duplex grade for a sour oil well or deepwater subsea system is not a minor error — it results in stress corrosion cracking (SCC), hydrogen-induced cracking (HIC), or catastrophic failure at depth. This guide explains when super duplex 2507 is required vs. standard duplex 2205, and what NORSOK M-630 and NACE MR0175 actually demand.

What Makes Oil Well Environments Aggressive?

Oil and gas wells present a combination of corrosion threats that most industrial environments do not:

  • H2S (hydrogen sulphide) — sour service: Even trace quantities cause sulphide stress cracking (SSC) in high-strength steels
  • CO2 (sweet corrosion): Carbonic acid attacks carbon steel; stainless and duplex grades resist it well
  • High chloride concentration: Formation water can contain 100,000+ ppm chlorides — far beyond standard seawater
  • High temperature + pressure: Deepwater wells reach 150°C and 1,000+ bar at reservoir conditions
  • Elemental sulphur: In some reservoirs, deposits elemental S which is extremely aggressive to stainless alloys

NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156 — The Sour Service Standard

NACE MR0175 (identical to ISO 15156) specifies materials acceptable for use in H2S-containing environments. For duplex stainless steels, the key requirements are:

RequirementNACE MR0175 LimitGrade 2205 ComplianceGrade 2507 Compliance
Maximum hardnessHRC 36 (340 HV)Yes — typically 270-310 HVYes — typically 290-320 HV
H2S partial pressure limitDepends on Cl- and pH; Table A.2Up to pH 3.5 + 10 kPa H2SSlightly wider envelope
Heat treatmentSolution annealed + quenchedRequiredRequired
Ferrite content35-65% ferriteYes (typically 40-55%)Yes (typically 45-55%)

Key point: NACE MR0175 hardness limits apply to the entire cross-section including weld HAZ — this is why weld procedures for duplex in sour service are critical and require full qualification per ASME Section IX.

NORSOK M-630 — Norwegian Offshore Standard

NORSOK M-630 is the Norwegian Oil and Gas Association's material data sheet standard for metallic materials used on the Norwegian Continental Shelf. It references specific material data sheets (MDS) for each grade. For super duplex 2507:

  • MDS D51: Seamless and welded pipe, ASTM A790 UNS S32750 (Grade 2507)
  • MDS D52: Forgings and bars, ASTM A182/A276 UNS S32750
  • MDS D53: Fittings, ASTM A815 WP2507

Each MDS specifies supplementary requirements beyond the base ASTM standard: impact testing at -46°C, 100% PMI, specific ferrite number (FN) limits, and corrosion testing per ASTM G48 Method A or E.

Grade 2205 vs. 2507: Choosing for Well Applications

ApplicationRecommended GradeReason
Subsea flowlines (deepwater, >500m)2507 (S32750)Higher PREN (42+) handles hot seawater + produced fluids
Topside process piping — moderate Cl-2205 (S32205)PREN 34+ sufficient; lower cost
Injection lines — seawater lift2507Seawater + residual H2S demands PREN 40+
Chemical injection tubing2507 or 6Mo (S31254)Aggressive inhibitor chemicals + high Cl-
Wellhead manifold piping2507 NACE MR0175H2S + high chloride + pressure
Produced water piping (low H2S)2205Cost-effective with adequate corrosion margin
Umbilical tubing2507 (seamless, small OD)NORSOK D-001 requires super duplex for hydraulic control lines

Corrosion Testing Requirements (ASTM G48)

NORSOK M-630 and most North Sea project specifications require pitting corrosion testing per ASTM G48:

  • Method A: Immersion in 6% FeCl3 at 50°C (2205) or 85°C (2507) for 24 hours — no weight loss > 4.0 g/m2
  • Method E: Critical pitting temperature (CPT) — 2205 CPT > 35°C, 2507 CPT > 50°C

These tests are typically performed on weld coupons as well as base material, since welds are the weak point in pitting resistance.

Welding Duplex Pipe for Sour Service

Weld procedures for duplex in sour service require particular attention:

  • Preheat: none (duplex is sensitive to sigma phase above 300°C)
  • Interpass temperature: max 150°C
  • Filler metal: overalloyed (e.g., ER2209 for 2205; ER2594 for 2507)
  • PWHT: none — duplex does not require PWHT; solution anneal if microstructure is affected
  • Ferrite check on weld: WRC diagram or magnetic measurement, target 30-55% ferrite in weld deposit
