NACE MR0175 (ISO 15156) defines material requirements for equipment used in H₂S-containing oil and gas environments (sour service) where sulfide stress cracking (SSC) and hydrogen-induced cracking (HIC) are potential failure mechanisms. Duplex stainless steel (S31803/S32205) and super duplex (S32750) are listed in ISO 15156-3 Table A.7 for use in sour service up to specified H₂S partial pressure, chloride concentration and temperature limits — provided hardness does not exceed 36 HRC (340 HBW) and the material is in the solution-annealed and quenched condition.

Duplex & Super Duplex Steel Grade Selection Guide

Selecting the correct duplex grade depends on the chloride concentration, temperature, H2S partial pressure, and design pressure of your application. Duplex 2205 (S31803/S32205) offers a PREN of 34–35 and handles chloride concentrations up to 1,000 ppm at temperatures up to 150°C. Super Duplex 2507 (S32750) with PREN 42 handles up to 35,000 ppm chloride (seawater) at temperatures to 220°C. For H2S sour service, both grades comply with NACE MR0175/ISO 15156 when hardness is maintained below HRC 28 (max HRC 32 per ASTM A890).
